Crystal Clear British Glass 1450-1900

A lecture on the evolution of glass from the Renaissance to the modern era through changes in style and techniques. George Ravenscroft (1618-1681) was the first to produce clear lead crystal glassware on an industrial scale. He initially used flint as the silica source before moving to sand.

Ravenscroft had close connections to Venice and the financial and cultural resources necessary to revolutionise the glass trade, setting the basis from which England overtook Venice and Bohemia as the centre of the glass industry in the 18th and 19th centuries.
