Clarice Cliff, 1899-1972, was an English ceramic artist and designer. Active from 1922 to 1963. Cliff became the head of the Newport Pottery factory creative department. At age 13, Cliff started working in the pottery industry as a gilder. She added gold lines on pottery of traditional design. Later, she learned freehand painting having moved on to another pot bank (a pottery factory in North Staffordshire used to make bone china earthenware and sanitaryware). She also studied art and sculpture at the Burslem School of Art. Come and join us to hear art historian, curator, author and journalist Vivienne Lawes explore Cliff's inventiveness and ability to capture the zeitgeist, over a century after her bold 'Bizarre' wares were launched in 1927.
