"Geology and Painting: The Geography of Art"

Monday 12th May 2025 at 14:30–15:45

Join The Arts Society Henfield for this months talk, by Stephen Taylor: Geology and Painting: The Geography of Art.

Stephen Taylor, artist and art historian, studied John Constable as a post graduate at Essex and Yale, taught at Felsted School and became Head of Painting at The Open College of the Arts.

Geological knowledge, and especially Lyell's 'Principles', changed the way painters saw the world to the point where Ruskin could say that in art the laws of geology "are the foundation of all other truths". A new sense of time and character in the landscape had emerged.

Guests welcome £10 on the door. Annual subscription £50.

Tea/Coffee from 2.00pm. Lecture 2.30pm.
