Presented by Henfield Theatre Company, one of the most uplifting stories ever written, Michelle Magorian’s stunning “Goodnight Mister Tom” is brought gloriously to life in this stage adaptation by David Wood – the UK’s ‘National Children’s Dramatist’ (The Times).
Set during the dark and dangerous early days of the Second World War, “Goodnight Mister Tom” follows sad young William Beech (played by Finn Donegan), who is evacuated to the idyllic English countryside with other children and builds a remarkable and moving friendship with the elderly recluse Tom Oakley (played by Ian Henham). Gradually Tom and Will build a positive relationship. All seems perfect until Will is devastatingly summoned back to London by his mother. The story takes some alarming twists and tragic turns during the Blitz, culminating in a daring kidnap.
Director, Rosemary Nice, says, “Nobody who has read the book or seen the film of the same name could fail to be moved by it and long for a happy ending as William’s story progresses. David Wood has turned it into a wonderful stage play, first performed at the Chichester Festival Theatre as part of the initiative to being the town onto the stage. We are privileged to bring it to Henfield.”
Performances are at the Henfield Hall, on 17th and 18th October at 7.45pm, and 19th October at 1.30pm and 5,30pm.
