The History of Japanese Woodcuts

Join the The Arts Society Henfield for their latest talk, "The History of Japanese Woodcuts" presented by Carol Wilhide Justin.

What are the differences between western and mokuhanga techniques? A historical overview of Ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese art which flourished from the 17th to the 19th century. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties, kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna, and erotica - an inspiration to later Western artists.
